Welcome to Duke Health! We are officially a part of the DHIP community:
Most people struggle with knee instability at some point in the life. A lot of times this will show up during exercise (namely, lunges or lunge-related exercises) but can show up when walking, climbing stairs, and other daily movements.
Most cases of knee instability start from weakness in the hips, and can be fixed with strengthening exercises. However, if you've tried this and still struggle (especially if your knee wants to fall inward), the cause may be something you haven't thought of nor expected: the arches in your feet.
Our feet are our base, and if we don't have a fully stable base, issues can travel up the body and create different issues. Issues with arch support include flat feet (having little to no arch), or high arches that offer limited support and may create a pronation of the foot when walking.
While pain is the most noticeable symptom when something in the body is out of alignment, this may cause no pain at all, but instead a feeling of weakness or instability. A simple trip to the podiatrist can help determine if you need additional support, such as orthotics, to help correct an arch problem. Call the office to schedule your appointment today!
